Caring to Achieve Resilience and Quality Among Survivors (CARES) Program
According to the federal legislation, the Trafficking Victims Protection of Act 2000 (TPVA) human trafficking is defined as:
- Sex trafficking in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such at has not attained 18 years of age.
- The recruitment, harboring, transportation, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage or slavery.
CARES provide a continuum of care of services to survivors of human trafficking that includes advocacy, client-centered case management and linkages to care.
Case management services are survivor-centered to address their holistic care needs. Case management services include but are not limited to the following needs:
- Medical
- Dental
- Behavioral health
- Cultural wellness/Traditional Healing
- Housing
- Food
- Identification card
- Legal
- Transportation
- Employment
- Homeless prevention
- Vision
- Protection/Safety planning
- Education
- Social services
- Translation
- Immigration
CARES accepts referrals from all sources including self referrals, referrals from community organizations/partners, families, friends, etc. CARES routinely provides community outreaches to identify and assist survivors including weekly street and community outreaches. CARES has strong community collaborations which create and support an effective continuum of care. Among its partnerships, is a collaboration with New Mexico Legal AID Services to provide on-site legal assessments and services to CARES’ clients.
